Would you like to grow more of your own food and flowers, but aren’t quite sure what you can grow as summer comes to an end?
Our Autumn Sessions are a relaxed, practical way to discover what can be grown through the cooler months. Over six weeks we’ll explore herbs, flowers, winter leaves, sweet peas, beans, peas and spring bulbs, with plenty of opportunities to get hands-on.
You don’t need a garden or allotment to take part. Many of the techniques we’ll explore work just as well in pots, containers, on balconies or in small spaces at home.
No previous growing experience is needed. Just come along, get your hands in the compost and have a go. Herbal teas and biscuits will be available each week, with plenty of time to chat, ask questions and share ideas.
The sessions will follow the changing season and what’s happening in the greenhouse.
Week 5 focus: Can you really start next year’s vegetables in October? We’ll find out by sowing autumn varieties of broad beans and peas and exploring how to get them established and protect young plants through colder weather. We’ll also look at how autumn sowing can give some crops a head start the following spring.
Alongside the weekly activity, we’ll take care of whatever needs doing and harvest crops as they become ready. Produce will support the wider community and, when there’s enough, be shared with participants too.
